and there were plenty of things stirring - especially our four new family members:
Holly, Molly, Lucy and Sophie.
Our new house came with HUGE bird cages/averies/chicken coops and we said back in June "one day we'll get chickens"... Well, finally, that day came! On Saturday 22 December we did a bit of initial prep to the coops, drove out to Lower Hutt to pick out four beauties, stopped by a feed shop to pick up supplies and now our lives as chicken nurturers has begun.
Tony, surprisingly, is the 'chicken whisperer' - he is really enjoying these hens and can be found hanging out having chats with them at different times of the day. Helena is the second biggest fan!!! If she had it her way, she'd probably be sleeping in the coop with them... but due to health concerns we will pull the plug on that one!
These chickens are going to live the high-life... they've got a tasty grain mixture plus all of our healthy scraps! YAHOO... oh... and now we've got a compost bin and we're going to plant some fruit trees... maybe we're more country mouse than we thought!?!?
We kept them in their substantially large coop for the first few days so they could get used to our home, but on Christmas Day we clipped their wings and let them roam. Who knew chickens could be such natural entertainers?!?! Eventually, the chickens will start laying eggs and then the fun really begins!
