Labour Day Weekend - Literally

Tony's been wanting to do something about our lawn for a while. He's been wanting a flat pitch where the kids can play cricket and the ball actually rolls; a smooth patch of happiness where we could picnic uniformly; a consistent green across the entirety of our 50 square metres... isn't this every man's dream?

Finding himself with nothing else too pressing to do (or maybe procrastinating from something else) he decided that the Saturday of Labour Weekend - 25 October - was as good a time as any to start this project... so at around noon, he started. He had one idea in mind, but after Ps John dropped off Will and Caleb for a spontaneous sleepover, Tony had a much more labour-intensive course of action...

First, using a shovel, he turned over the entire lawn.

We then raked up the big pieces of old grass and broke up the dirt clods and tried to even the dirt out a bit.

Next we raked the now dirt-only patch to smooth it out and prepare it for the soil.

As it was a windy afternoon, we did water it a bit just to hold the dirt down (notice the big pile of soil in the corner... well, that had to be moved from the front of the house by using a wheelbarrow and shovel)... and well... that was about all we could do on Day One because by this point it was about 6pm and we had 4  hungry children needing some attention.
(Slumber party story in another post)

On Day Two - Sunday 26 October - we of course went to church for a great service at the Opera House (thankfully it was the early service) then picked up the lawn roller and came home to get back into it!

After rolling the area, Tony then picked up a very long piece of wood from some friends and used it to further flatten and even out the patch of now soil covered yard. Tony is incredibly thorough!

On Monday - 27 October - we got to do the actual sowing...

The sown seeds were then sprinkled with another layer of soil to ensure the birds wouldn't just come to pluck them...

Bright and early Tuesday morning before work, Tony went out to finish the back section (as we'd run out of seeds on Monday)...

And now...
We water and wait... water and wait... water and wait... OH... the following Saturday a man dropped by and told Tony that he needed to irrigate the lawn better - so Tony went out and bought a 'fork' so the water can drain into the depths of the soil! Just in time for the rain that was to come!

I know we're looking forward to the report on our lush green grass at the end of three months!!! Until then... we wait!
