Every country needs an excuse to light fireworks, right!?! I mean, it seems everywhere I've ever lived there is some kind of holiday that allows average people the opportunity to blow things up or light fires... I don't fully understand the 'urge' or need to light fireworks, but heck, that's just the way things are. Like in the US we've got Independence Day on the 4th of July, in Taiwan there's Chinese New Year and weddings and funerals and well, you name it they've got a reason for firecrackers and fireworks, and in NZ/UK they've got Guy Fawkes day. The history behind Guy Fawkes is actually rather grusome - something about a rebel who tried to destroy something in England which made the government upset and so the people made effigies of him and burned those to commemorate his defeat (well, that's my super abridged take on it based from some readings we did to explain it to Hunter last week). Anyway, Guy Fawkes is the day New Zealanders get to light fireworks. Not being ones to miss out, Tony woke Hunter up and took him over to a park where some of our friends were lighting their own fireworks. Seems that freaked Hunter out a bit and it all was sorta not so fun until Tony changed tactics and took him up to a look out in Newlands where they could see the big city fireworks display from a safe distance.
One of the cool parts of the second part of the night was that they bumped into the Teal's up on the same hill at the same look-out! How fun!
Apparently, not like you can tell from this photo, it was a pretty impressive fireworks display and Hunter did enjoy this one. When it was all over, the guys came home, Hunter took off his jacket and outer clothes and hopped back into bed! Fun, fun, fun...
