When we bought our new house in June, we bought it because it had 'potential'. There was another area attached to our main home that had its own bathroom, lounge and bedroom - with its own access. We had a couple of options for how to deal with that area - 1) use it as a hang out area; 2) rent it out in a 'board' situation; 3) add a kitchen and go the whole enchilada... so being the future-forward-thinking family we are we went the whole enchilada!!!
Even though this project was literally in our backyard and it was a small space, it still required a lot of work. I likened it to packing for a holiday - you basically need the same amount of stuff if you go for one week as you do for one month!!! We had to 1) have an architect draw up plans to submit to the council for consent; 2) design a kitchen; 3) buy the kitchen and appliances; 4) organise the kitchen-fitters, plumber and electrician; and because it's the whole enchilada - it has to have a fire-rated wall between the two dwellings so we had to 5) organise the builders to create such a thing! So you can understand why there are too many entries lately...
And as if this project wasn't enough - we were having the roof repaired at the same time so on one Thursday in this 2+ week project there were 11 different tradesmen and inspectors that had come through our house!!! And on most days there were at least 3-5 of them doing their thing.
Our deck area was the store room - but that didn't seem to keep our kids from playing outside!!! (though I did keep our Friday morning women's group children inside... too many exciting tools to get into)
Thankfully the plumber suggested we hook the washing machine to the outside sink! Brilliant - having to haul laundry to friend's houses would've been just a bit too much excitement for us...
Once the kitchen was installed, Tony got to work tiling the 'splash-back' - he hired a tile cutter and within 24 hours he'd finished the job!!! What a man!!!
And here's the finished product - the newly 'self-contained flat'!!!
It really turned out so nice - a bit compact, but thankfully it's a newly-married couple who have moved in and they don't need much space just yet!
And on our side - we've got this new fire-rated wall that goes all the way up into the ceiling and into the floor...
Of course nobody will ever know because it's been re-painted and the cupboards have been put back in... the only difference is about half a foot less space in my laundry room... hmmm, don't even notice!!!
